Preventative Care

Do you see someone with a beautiful smile and feel like yours isn’t quite as bright and fresh? It takes some effort to enjoy excellent oral health, but it doesn’t necessarily require years of extensive treatment. At Keech Family Dentistry, we’re able to treat a wide variety of dental problems, but it’s better for you if you never need these advanced treatments.

So exactly what will it take for you to achieve the perfect smile you’ve always wanted?  If you’re truly committed to a healthier smile, preventative treatments are the best place to start.

The Oral-Systemic Connection

For some people, receiving even the most basic dental care can be a challenge. But experience has shown us that helping our patients understand the importance of a healthy smile motivates them to stay current with dental visits.

Every day we’re learning more about the link between the health of the mouth and our overall health, referred to as the oral-systemic connection. If you suffer from chronic decay and gum disease, you put yourself at greater risk for serious health concerns like heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory disease.

In fact, a recent study by the American Academy of Periodontology found that patients with advanced stages of gum disease are twice as likely to contract heart disease as those who don’t have gum disease.

The Importance of Routine Professional Dental Cleanings

Food and beverages you consume throughout the day adhere to the surfaces of your teeth, creating plaque. When plaque coats the tooth enamel and isn’t removed, it can lead to gum disease. You need to do your part by maintaining a conscientious oral hygiene routine, but even your best efforts can’t eliminate plaque completely.

Twice-yearly professional cleanings allow our hygienist to monitor your oral health by checking your gums and removing any plaque. If we do find signs of gum disease, we’ll develop a treatment plan to get your oral health back on track.

Regular Dental Checkups

Comprehensive dental exams are just as important as dental cleanings. During your regular checkups, Dr. Keech will look for any underlying issues and address them before they create more serious problems in the future. Digital radiographs provide us with highly detailed images that show us the tiniest problems when they’re easier to fix.

In addition to your exam, Dr. Keech may recommend the following preventative treatments:

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride is important for keeping your family's teeth healthy and strong. You may already receive enough fluoride through other sources like toothpaste and mouth rinses; if not, we can supplement this with topical applications at our Fayetteville dental office.

Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are a thin coating of plastic material applied to the uneven surfaces of back teeth, which are most likely to develop cavities. Sealants are perfect for kids because their teeth are usually still healthy, and protecting them with sealants will help keep them that way.
